"Trigger Happy" showcases the vibrant energy of the triggerfish, a species known for its feisty nature and unique "people teeth." This playful character is rendered in soft, unexpected shades of purple and gold, set against the backdrop of a crystal-clear, grape-hued sea.
Using a 100% polypropylene Yupo medium, I applied a wax resist technique before layering watercolors to build the vibrant depth and fluidity of the fish. This piece marked an experiment with softer tones, and I was thrilled with how the regal combination of purple and gold emerged—who knew a triggerfish could look so majestic?

Yupo paper is a surface typically used for alcohol inks; however in my application with watercolor, the paint responds similarly to thin acrylics and can be backed out of an area. As the paint and water scoot across the surface, there is a limit to the control you can have. This substrate enables you to paint loose.
